Mama's Sage Bread

1 cup milk

3 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon minced onion

2 tablespoons buttter


2 packages dry yeast

1 cup very warm water


4 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour

2 teaspoons sage crumbled

Makes 1 large loaf

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Grease a tube pan

1. Scald milk with sugar, salt, onion, and butter then cool to lukewarm.

2. Sprinkle yeast into water in LARGE bowl stir until dissolved. Add the cooled milk mixture.

3. Stir in flour and sage until well blended, then beat vigorously, scraping sides of bowl,100 strokes [dough will be sticky and heavy].

4. Cover the bown with a towel and let rise in warm place about 1 hr. or until doubled in size.

5. Stir dough down; spoon into greased tube pan; bake about 1 hr. in 375 degrees oven.
