: I'm in search of a very old molasses cookie recipe we used as kids back in the 1950s and 60s. We're pretty sure it was on a Brer Rabbit Molasses bottle, but the recipe provided when we wrote to the producer isn't the one we remember. Unlike every other recipe I've tried (and I've tried many), these cookies spread out flat (about 3 inches in circumference) and were quite sticky.

Glenda,

I don't know if these are what you're looking for, but they sound great!

Joe Frogger's Jumbo Molasses Cookies

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
1 cup water
1 cup molasses
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1. Cream the shortening and sugar; combine the mixture with water and molasses.
2. Sift together the dry ingredients and add alternately to the creamed mixture with the liquids. Blend well after each addition.
3. Drop by spoon onto a well-greased cookie sheet, making five cookies to a sheet.
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Dough can be chilled overnight and rolled to cut with cookie cutters.
