when I was in music school and broke, a friend and I were at a
restaurant like IHOP which had pancake syrups on the table. I
couldn't spare the price of a drink and was always playing with
foods, anyway, so I made sure no one was looking and put boysenberry
syrup in my glass of ice water. I thought it was great! My friend,
a wealthy European girl, was a bit disconcerted, however. I never
did that again. Italian soda, eh? ;-)
.
Now Torani flavored syrups are available at the restaurant
supply place down the street (Smart & Final for those in CA) and
I refill them with simple syprup flavored with extracts or liquid
coffee flavoring drops I occasionally come across. The hazelnut is
wonderful. I also add vodka or brandy to them and let them steep
when I don't feel like making full-blown liqueurs and it's a
reasonable not-for-company replacement.
