I was not born in the South and I can't believe I actually EAT this but, in Georgia, a popular snack food is hot boiled peanuts. (Yeah, you read that correctly.) Basically, you take raw peanuts (in the shell) and boil them in salty water until they're tender. The water really has to be almost briney (in terms of the amount of salt) to get the right taste. These are sold at ball games and fairs all over Georgia. Also, people get creative about the flavorings. I've had hickory flavor (boiled in water flavored with a ham hock and hickory seasonings), barbecue flavor (boiled in some slightly thinned bbq sauce), cajun (boiled in water with cajun spices) and garlic (boiled in water with salt, pepper and garlic). They can be really good. Just don't eat them lukewarm or cold. Yuck!!
