Hi Kar,
I have a cook "booklet" called "Choosy Mothers Peanut Butter Book" published by Jif in 1979...
This sounds like the recipe you want, (incidentally, soft cookies are usually achieved by using shortening and crispy by using margarine or butter)Butter usually returns to it's solid state after baking and cooling, and shortening tends to stay soft as in it's original form...this has been my experience...
I have several (quite a few recipes in this book, but this one sounds like it)
Peanut Butter Kisses
l cup granulated sugar
l cup packed brown sugar
l cup shortening
l cup Jif peanut butter
2 eggs
1/4 c. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
3-1/2 c. sifted all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
l tsp. salt
l 11-oz. package milk chocolate candies (Hershey's kisses)
Preheat oven to 375. Cream together granulated sugar, brown sugar, shortening, and Jif. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla; beat well. Stir together flour, baking soda, and salt; add to Jif mixture. Beat well. Shape into 1 inch balls; roll in additional granulated sugar. Place on ungreased baking sheet, and bake for 8 min. remove from oven and press a milk chocolate candy in the center of each warm cookie, and return to oven for 3 minutes longer.. Makes 6/7 dozen

P.S. You can omit the hershey thing, and just press your thumb in the raw dough. Good luck....and if this doesn't work...there's more recipes here!!
