Hi Juanita,
This is from my most cherished cookbook.."The Lily Wallace New American
Cookbook" published in 1947. It belonged to my grandmom!

Apple Brown Betty
1/2 to 1 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1 and 1/2 cups dry bread crumbs
3 cups sliced or chopped apples
1/4 cup water
juice and grated rind of 1 lemon
3 Tbsp. butter

Mix sugar, spices and salt. If apples are very tart, use additional sugar---up
to 1 cup. Grease a 1 and 1/2 quart casserole. Put in 1/3 of the bread crumbs,
then half the apples. Sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat
procedure. Mix water, lemon juice, and rind, pour over. Put on remaining
crumbs and dot with butter. Cover and bake in a moderate oven(350^F) 1 and 3/4
hours. Serves 6.
