I wrap the bottom of the springform pan with heavy aluminum foil, about 2 inches bigger than the pan. Now, fold it under the bottom, then put the ring on and close it. Then fold the foil up the outside of the springform pan. When cake is done, remove ring, and slide a cardboard round underneath and tape the foil down on the bottom. I have never had cracking problems with this.
