I wasn't sure where to post this and hope it is acceptable here. First, a month or so my husband and I watched a documentary on the History Channel to do with the origins of American Food. Pizza was one of them. I was surprised to learn it was of Greek origin and didn't have tomato sauce!! They baked Focaccia bread, applied cheese and veggies and that was that. The Romans got a hold of
it and took it home where it was the people of Naples who eventually added the sauce. Well, my husband complains about the amount of sauce some pizza places use and this documentary seemed to offer a solution. I'm not sure about naming name brands here, but this past week I purchased a pizza crust in the bread section, it was seasoned and contained mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. In the cheese section I purchased packaged deli-sliced mozzarella and provolone (about 9 slices ea.), by the same manufacturer. I then got a package of pepperoni-about 50 to the package. At home I cut the first 4 slices on moz. from corner to corner and laid then around the crust. I cut 4 slices provolone in 1/2 and laid them between the moz. Then I laid on the pepperoni, some slipped slightly under the cheeses. Ultimately, I cut the remaining moz. into 4 pieces and also the provolone and laid it all on. I baked it according to directions on the package for the the crust. It was great! My husband loved this 'Grecian Pizza'. As a treat, yesterday, a few days after my try at this concoction, the History Channel re-ran the documentary. I reccommend this idea to any who is put off by tomato sauce on their pizzas.
