Hi Nancy; We have always bought the whole ham with the bone in, this has a whole lot more flavor than boneless hams. For many years I have used a can of beer on my ham while it is baking. I cut the skin and most of the fat off of the ham, leaving just a small layer of fat. Put in an open roasting pan in a 350 oven, bake until the fat starts to brown a bit. Pour a can of beer over the ham, cover with foil or the lid of the roaster and turn oven down to 325. Bake according to instructions on packaging as to time per pound. The beer gives the ham a delicious flavor and seems to tenderize it. Also as an added bonus your kitchen will smell like you are baking bread. If your ham is really large you may want to use more than one can of beer. The alcohol bakes off, no need to worry about that. Some people also use coca-cola instead of beer, I've never tried that.
