This was so popular when I grew up in Wisconsin. You can also make these into individual tortes.
SCHAUM TORTE-GERMAN
7 egg whites 2 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vinegar 1/2 tsp. vanilla 2 (16 oz.) pkg. frozen strawberries or 3 pt. fresh berries 1 pt. whipping cream or 1 large Cool Whip
Beat egg whites until stiff and hold shape. Add sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until all is used. Add salt, vanilla and vinegar. Beat until very stiff. Line cookie sheet with brown paper. Make 2 large circles on paper with dough or make the dough long. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Leave torte in oven until oven cools. Place torte on cake plate using half of berries. Place them on torte, spread cream on top and put 2nd torte on top. Put berries and cream on top. Let torte set in refrigerator a few hours before serving.
