Old Fashioned Fudge Frosting
2 1 ounce squares unsweetened chocolate or 1/4 c. cocoa (powder) 3 Cups sugar 3 tablespoons light corn syrup (karo) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 1/4 cup real butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine chocolate, sugar, syrup, salt and milk in at least a 3 quart saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves and chocolate is melted. Cook to soft ball stage. Remove fron heat and add butter and cool until mixture is just warm ( cool enough that you can put your hand on the bottom of the pot and hold it there ). Add vanilla and beat by hand using a wooden spoon until mixture is of spreading consistency. This makes enough to frost a 2 layer cake.
