Hi Esther:-) I don't know if this is the recipe you are looking for. It is from my Betty Crocker's Cookbook, 1971. I have not tried this recipe since I love the recipe on the back of the Hershey's unsweetened chocolate (baking chocolate) box.
Brownies
4 oz. unsweetened chocolate 2/3 c. shortening 2 c, sugar 4 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1 c. chopped nuts
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease baking pan, 13 X 9 X 2 inches. Melt chocolate and shortening in large saucepan over low heat. (This was before most people had microwaves so you could melt the chocolate and shortening in the microwave instead. Just put in microwave-safe bowl and nuke on high-power for 1 minute. Stir. Nuke for 30 more seconds if necessary but no longer since you don't want the chocolate to burn.) Remove from heat. Mix in sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Spread in pan.
Bake 30 minutes or until brownies start to pull away from the edges of the pan. Do not overbake. Cool. Cut into bars about 2 X 1 1/2 inches. If desired, spread with Glossy Frosting before cutting.
Glossy Chocolate Frosting Fills and frosts two 8 or 9 inch layers or frosts a 13 X 9 X 2 inch cake.
3 Tbl. shortening 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate 2 c. confectioner's sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1/3 c. milk 1 tsp. vanilla
Melt shortening and chocolate in saucepan over low heat (or use the microwave method mentioned for the brownies.) Stir in remaining ingredients; beat until smooth. Place pan of frosting in bowl of ice and water; continue beating until of spreading consistency. If desired, stir in 1/2 c. finely chopped nuts.
