Marta -- your party sounds like so much fun. Your friends are lucky. There are so many ways to answer your question. I look forward to seeing thoughts from others. Here are a few of my thoughts.

Many foods that can be called traditional American recipes vary a lot according to what part of the United States you might be dining.

Setting that aside for now, scones are very popular everywhere. They are particular favorites at state and county fairs. Many folks go to state or county fairs not to see the animals, or ride the ferris wheel, but to sample foods ... including scones. Scones are different from cobblers.

A popular way to make cobbler is to make what is called impossible cobbler. (The word impossible denotes that a biscuit mix was used to make the crust. Bisquick is a popular biscuit mix.)

I have included some impossible cobbler recipes with this post. I also included a recipe for homemade biscuit mix incase you do not have access to one. These, however, do not use fresh berries. Oops. I am going to post a couple other ideas, but I will use separate posts.

HOMEMADE BISCUIT MIX

12 cups flour
1/4 cup baking powder
2 tablespoons salt
1 pound vegetable shortening

Mix together the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.

Add vegetable shortening and blend together with a pastry blender, two knives, or your fingertips, until mixture is the same
texture as coarse cornmeal.

Store in a dry cool place.

Yield: makes 15 cups

IMPOSSIBLE BISQUICK FRUIT COBBLER

1/4 cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup milk
1-1/2 cup Bisquick (r) baking mix
1 cup sugar
1 can (21 ounce) pie filling ... fruit flavors of choice

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Melt margarine in 11x7" baking pan. Add milk, Bisquick mix and sugar; stir until smooth. Drop spoonfuls of pie filling over the batter (don't worry, batter will rise up). Bake 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

IMPOSSIBLE BLUEBERRY COBBLER

1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
4 cups fresh or frozen (thawed) blueberries
2 tablespoons water
1 cup Bisquick baking mix
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 cup milk1/4 cup dairy sour cream

Heat oven to 425?. Grease 1 l/2 -quart round casserole. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and the cornstarch in 2-quart saucepan; stir in blueberries and water. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Pour into casserole. Mix remaining ingredients until soft dough forms. Drop dough by 6 spoonfuls onto hot blueberry mixture. Bake until golden brown, about 20
minutes. Serve with cream if desired.

6 servings.
High Altitude Directions (3500 to 6500 feet): Heat oven to 450 degrees.
