I've been using this recipe for years and it is wonderful. I substitute low fat cream cheese and low fat margarine though. Even the "green can" cheese will work if the fresh is not available. I make my alfredo in the microwave. That way, there is less stirring and my hands are free to prepare the pasta and toss the salad.
