During the war it was impossible to obtain certain foodstuffs like ground almonds. Most housewives had a book which I think was distributed by the government in England to give ideas on recipes which did not contain any of the unobtainable products. One of the recipes was for 'pretend' Bakewell tart. The recipe substituted semolina and almond essence for the ground almonds. This produced a moist and a superior tart than the real thing. (having lived in Bakewell, I do know what the real thing tastes like.) Does anyone still have that wartime book and can give me the recipe? There was also a so called lemon pie which was made using grated potatoe and lemon juice. It sounds horrid but it was actually one of my favourites along with the mintoes made from the milk powder that we used to get. I would so love to make these items to relive the memories. Dorothy
