My Mom used to make wilted lettuce or spinach salad with hard boiled eggs sliced into it. She fried bacon pieces until crisp, removed them to drain, then used some of the bacon grease for the base of a hot vinegar dressing, using a bit of sugar, apple cider vinegar and salt and pepper, which resulted in a sweet/sour dressing. She poured this, while hot, over torn lettuce or spinach leaves and tossed in sliced hard cooked eggs. We had this as a main dish salad. I now saute some sliced shallots in the bacon grease before adding the vinegar, sugar and salt and pepper. I sometimes drain almost all the grease out of the pan and use Splenda as the sweetener to make a lighter salad. I don't really measure, I just use vinegar and sweetener to taste, but I have a wilted lettuce recipe I can post if this sounds like what your husband is talking about-Micha
