Born in Glendale myself (3rd generation), I too was a corner newspaper boy and Helm's Bakery truck fanatic. I sold the now defunct Mirror News on a Burbank San Fernando Road street corner just in front of Thrifty Drugs. Thrifty was the perfect location, because a 5 cent tip on a 10 cent paper could be instantly converted into a pistachio or black walnut ice cream cone just inside Thrifty's front door. I was in love with the 19 year old ice cream scooper to boot. But do you think she would save herself for me while I grew up? Nope! Hard to believe we 5th grade 10 year olds were roaming downtown streets often well after dark (at least in my case). Helm's cream puffs were indeed heaven on earth, but generally too expensive for me. Fortunately, significantly more affordable Helm's glazed doughnuts had to be the best ever made and white powdered jellies almost equally sinful. And weren't the trucks works of art? I recall beautiful wood doors that slid like butter.
