This is my first visit to the website due to searching for imformation about Spry. I have been working on a family cookbook and came across the recipe for Minute Boil Fudge Frosting which called for Spry. My Mom had to think a while before telling me she thought that Spry was a shortening but wasn't sure. Thanks to this website, I confirmed it. The recipe follows.

MINUTE BOIL FUDGE FROSTING

2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, finely cut
1 1/2 cups sugar
7 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons Spry (vegetable shortening, like Crisco)
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon Karo corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine first seven ingredients in a saucepan and bring slowly to a full rolling boil, stirring constantly, and boil briskly 1 minute. (On a rainy day boil 2 minutes.) Cool to lukewarm.

Add vanilla extract. Beat until you think it can be spread on cake. If frosting becomes thick, add a little cream or soften over hot water.

Makes enough frosting for 2 (8-inch) cake layers.
