APPLE NUT DESSERT1 cup white granulated sugar
3/4 cup sifted, all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon shortening
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup cut-up nuts
3 cups cut-up canned or peeled fresh apple
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
ice cream (optional, for serving)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (hot).
In a 2-quart bowl, mix together 1 cup white sugar, 3/4 cup sifted flour, baking powder and shortening with a fork. Add evaporated milk and vanilla and stir until well mixed. Add nuts an apple and stir until coated with batter. Spread in a greased 9-inch square baking pan.
Mix together brown sugar, 1/3 cup flour and butter or margarine with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple mixture.
Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
Serve warm or cold. Spoon into dishes or cut into 9 squares. If desired, top with ice cream.
