Hi Denise,
Jeanne and Tracey are correct with all their ideas on the disposer, but also remember, that black rubber gasket that fits over the disposer and is visible from the top of the sink...well, that needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis.
When you pull it off, (it comes off easily) there is slime and scum underneath it, and that makes it smell too. I use an old toothbrush just for this cleaning. Clean it and scrub it with Clorox gel and like the girls said, run a piece of lemon in the grinder to freshen it up or some vinegar and baking soda in it. Let is bubble up, sit for 2-3 mts. then grind it away.
Also, make sure you look in there and feel around with your hand that something is not stuck in there. We have a septic tank and I do not grind anything at all in there because it will upset the delicate balance...it's ok to grind away if you are on city sewer though.
Good Luck!!
