Seal it: Clean it: Protect it: Don't neglect it.

Generally speaking, granite surfaces are resistant to both heat and scratches. Surfaces can discolor from heat. The use of coasters or placemats under dishes may be a good habit.

Polished granites can show scratches. Although its hardness makes scratches rare, scratches must be repaired professionally. The professional would sand the scratch out with a diamond abrasive, then repolish the surface.

Granite is susceptible to food and liquid stains. To minimize staining, granite countertops must be sealed every 6 months to a year with a penetrating sealer that soaks into the stone and provides invisible protection. Wipe up spills immediately, especially acid liquids, like fruit or vinegar. The acid will etch the surface.

Routine cleaning can be accomplished with stone care cleaning products manufactured specifically for granite, or mild household detergent and water solution may be used. Never use scourers (steel wool) or harsh cleaning products especially acid-based cleaners eg vinegar and baking-soda. The following could severely damage the surface - high-speed buffed Wax finishes; solvents; wax or polish containing color agents; oils; or turpentine.
