Every once in a while, I just have to have this...I was talking about it with a friend the other day, and she loves it , too!

So, yesterday I loaded this into the bread machine, and made a 2lb loaf, half of which I set apart for her.

This is a doctored version of the one that came with my bread machine instructions, the very first one years ago. It made a 1 lb loaf, (do they still make those?). I guess we are going back about 12 years or so, anyway, I have had several machines since then!

Cheers!

EUROPEAN BLACK BREAD
2 lb. loaf

13 oz water (I use 1/2 water, 1/2 strong coffee)
1 1/2 tsp cider vinegar
3 cups flour (I use 1 cup whole wheat flour, 2 cups bread flour)
1 cup rye flour
1/2 cup oat bran
2 TBSP butter
2 TBSP sugar
2 tsp salt
1 TBSP caraway seeds
1 TBSP minced onion (dried)
4 TBSP unsweetened cocoa powder
2 1/2 tsp yeast

Load into the bread machine and set for whole wheat cycle (or basic, if you don't have w.w.).

If you like pumpernickel, you will love this too!
