okay so i have done this(saved for rags) and then thye get mixed back in!! sooooo i would suggest that you cut the toe end OFF so as to not mix them back in.

I also as a mom of four give you premission to just go ahead and thorw them away!! i know saving is good and i do if i find the moment but to save them means to find a receptiacle to put them in and find them again when needed ... and the list goes on ... so do what is best for YOU :)
