Cooked Mints
1 c. sugar 1/2 c. shortening 1/2 c. milk 1 box + 1 c. powdered sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. butter flavoring oil of peppermint
Bring to a boil the sugar, shortening and milk. Put powdered sugar, salt and butter flavoring in mixing bowl. Pour boiled mixture over sugar mixture; mix until it starts to thicken. Add 3 to 8 drops oil of peppermint (according to taste); mix well. Put into pastry bag; squeeze onto wax paper. Put portion not being used over hot water, so it will not set up.
