Hi Cathy, think this is what you were describing.....

MATRIMONIAL CAKE

l l/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
l tsp. baking powder
l/4 tsp salt
l cup butter
l cup brown sugar
l l/2 cup oatmeal

Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Rub in butter with tip of fingers. Add sugar and oatmeal and mix well. Spread half the crumbs into a greased shallow pan. Pat to make smooth. Cover with cool date filling (recipe below). Spread evenly. Cover with remaining crumbs and bake in moderate oven (350) for 30 minutes. Increase heat and bake for a few minutes longer (375) Cut into squares while still hot. Let cool in pan.

DATE FILLING - cook until soft, then mash with fork:

l cup chopped dates
l cup water.

Cool slightly.
*you can add l c. thick rhubarb jam, which really enhances the flavor. I have
only tried it with the jam so you might want to add the water gradually or double the dates if you omit the jam... Hope this helps......
