Hough Bakeries did not allow anyone to publish recipes and that included the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Individuals who knew formulas or recipes may have submitted what they knew but the company, which was closed by then owners Amerifoods and Merrill Lynch Capital Partners, did not release any such information.

The reference to my Uncle Robert's cookbook, Menu Planning for all Occasions, did include some of the older recipes geared to the catering side of the business which he ran until he retired.

Robert Pile was not a baker but one of the 4 sons of Lionel A. Pile, the founder of Hough Bakeries. The bakery was begun in 1903 on Hough Avenue in Cleveland and was sold to Amerifoods in 1990. After two years of their management the company was abruptly shutdown and put into bankruptcy. Almost 12 years to the day I recieved a check for lost wages from the court.

A former Hough employee, Archie Garner, started Archie's Lakeshore Bakery at 14906 Lake Shore Blvd and you will find excellent baked goods at his shop. I recommend him to anyone searching for the same quality products as the Pile family produced when Hough was a locally owned company.
