Try 1/2 cup milk to 1/2 cup flour with one beaten egg add 1/2 cup finely shredded cheddar and some ground pepper to taste. My family loves the addition of the cheddar. We found the traditional toads to be rather boring. The batter will not poof up with the addition of the cheese. For a more colorful dish add some parsley flakes to the batter.
