I have tried Campfire Pies as well. I am a Girl Scout Leader and we do these at camp. Also you can use bread. You butter the outside of the bread and fill the same way You can also use cresent rolls. My pie pans are square. Cast Iron pie pans are the best. Any pie filling is good. I try to press the edges together some. That helps keep the filling in. Remember to check them fairly often so that they don't burn.
