DARRELL'S MOM'S DETROIT BURGERS

1 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck
10 saltine crackers, finely crushed
1 cup unsweetened applesauce, drained
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
TO SERVE:
Hamburger buns
Lettuce
Sliced tomato

In a large bowl, place the beef, saltines and applesauce. Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Form the mixture into 6 patties about 1-inch thick. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to cook.

Prepare a charcoal fire or preheat a grill to medium-high heat.

When the grill is ready, oil the grates. Carefully place the burgers on the grill and cook about 8 to 10 minutes. Turn and cook another 4 to 5 minutes for medium or to your desired degree of doneness.

Remove to a platter and serve on buns topped with lettuce, tomato and favorite condiments.
