This is a family recipe that came from my Grandmother. Often I am asked for it because they are soft, and don't EVER turn out flat and crunchy. Follow the recipe carefully, and go in the order stated and I guarantee they will be soft and shaped like little mounds of cookie! Happy munching!

GRANDMA K'S OATMEAL COOKIES

Cream Together:
1 Tablespoon Vanilla
1 Cup Shortening (I use regular Crisco in the can)
1 cup brown sugar (I use the light brown)
1/2 Cup Granulated white sugar
3 eggs (She ALWAYS used brown ones, but I don't)

Add to the creamed mixture IN THIS ORDER:
Cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to taste (About a teaspoon each)
1 Cup oatmeal (Not quick oats)
1 cup raisins
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 Teaspoons of Baking powder
1 Cup VERY HOT water (Like burn your finger hot!)
3 cups of Flour
1/2 cup crushed nuts of your choice (I use walnuts)

Mix well, but try not to overmix. This dough will seem very like cake dough, don't add more flour though you will be tempted.

Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Watch the first batch and as soon as the shine is gone from the center, and they have risen a bit, they're done. These cookies taste much better when cool- Pretty yucky when hot!

Hope these are what you're looking for!
