Found this recipe in very old Indian vegetarian cookbook. I have a friend who is very allergic to yeast itself (imagine...no bread!!!eek!)so thought this would be a good idea:
Khamir Yeast
1 cup plain flour 2 tbs warm yoghurt 2 tsp soft brown sugar 12 black peppercorns 2 tbs warm water
mix the ingredients togetherbeat well and leave in a warm place overnight. and that's it!!
Leavened Puris 2 cups plain flour 2 tbs Khamir yeast 3 tsp soft brown sugar 1 tsp salt 2 tbs ghee (clarified butter) 1 cup warm milk 1 egg beaten
Sieve flour, add khamir, sugar salt and ghee. Gradually add enough warm milk and egg to make a dough. Knead well and leave to stand for 2 hours. Sprinkle on a little warm water and knead again. Roll out into circles about 3 inches across, leave to rise again and then deep fry in hot oil until golden.
