When I run out of buttermilk, I make my own.

For one cup: place 1 TBSP of freshly squeezed lemon juice or distilled white
vinegar in a glass measuring cup. Add in 1 percent or any percent milk to equal
1 cup. Let stand for 5 mins. stirring at the end of the time.

Or, use 2/3 cup plain nonfat or any fat yogurt plus 1/3 cup 1 percent or any
percent milk to equal 1 cup.
