Although I have not tried powdered jello for making frosting (My family wants Chocolate or 7 minute, that all) I have made that salad using cottage cheese, powdered jello, cool whip and canned fruit. I have used all different flavors of jello and all different kind of fruit. The jello always does dissolve after sitting in the fridge a while. I usually let it sit for a couple of hours.
