This has really been interesting. The recipe is in my oldest Betty Crocker cookbook from 1956. My Mom made this recipe in 3 layers with lemon filling and coconut sprinkled white icing. I remember she took it to a church picnic once and the layers had sort of slid around. She was quite mortified, but it quickly disappeared anyway. It is a wonderful cake, was always my favorite. My cookbook says Reminiscent of White Mountain Cake, the rage of the Gay Nineties and the first popular "white cake" to be created. Sometimes the oldest recipes really are the best! Thanks to all of you for the memories.
