Just came across a book I haven't seen in years but I remember these cookies were really good. They were the grand-prize-winning chocolate chip cookie from a contest that drew 2,600 entries. In a book called "The Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie." Lots of good recipes -- besides other "classic recipes," some are made with dried apricots or apple butter or pumpkin or molasses -- but I remember really liking this one.

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies

1-3/4 cups flour
1/4 t. baking soda
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 t. vanilla extract
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
2 T. milk
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
6 oz. (1 cup) semisweet chocolate chips

Combine flour and baking soda, and set aside. Use an electric mixer to cream butter. Add vanilla and sugars, and beat until fluffy. Beat in egg. At low speed, beat in cocoa, then milk. With a wooden spoon, mix in dry ingredients just until blended. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.

Drop by rounded teaspoonsful onto nonstick or foil-lined baking sheets. Bake at 350 for 12 to 13 minutes. Remove from oven and cool slightly before removing from baking sheets.

Yield: 3 dozen
