Nancy, I assume the coconut has the outer layer removed before you bought it and is only the hard brown, hairy shell.

Use a sharp knife to remove the "eye" and drein the liquid.

Just drop the coconut on a hard (concrete) surface but be careful it doesn't bounce and hit you in the face. Try this a couple of times and it should crack.
