I'm not familiar with the recipe, but I found this one which may be what you're talking about. However, I can't find one with caramel. As for nuts, of course, they're easy to add.
CHERRY BROWNIES
1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling 1 box chocolate cake mix 2 eggs, beaten
Topping: 1 c. sugar 5 tbsp. butter 1/2 c. canned milk or heavy cream 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
In a large bowl, combine pie filling, cake mix, and eggs. Spread mixture into a 15 x 10 inch pan. Bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees; let cool. In small saucepan, mix sugar, milk, and butter. Boil 1 minute. Add chocolate chips; stir until melted. Spread over cooled brownies.
