BENNE SEED BISCUITS

1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp sesame seeds, divided use
2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling)
1 tbsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Place 1/2 cup sesame seeds in a heavy skillet; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until lightly browned.

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and toasted seeds in a large mixing bowl; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Add milk; stir well.

Turn dough out on a floured surface; knead lightly 10-12 times. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame seeds over biscuit tops, pressing in slightly. Place on ungreased baking sheet.

Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Makes about 1 1/2 dozen
