ORANGE KUCHEN RING
"When you feel like splurging, treat the family to orange buns—or bake them in a ring mold for a party."
1 pkg. active dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water (not hot - 110 to 115 degrees F) 2 tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 1/2 cup soft butter 2 1/2 cups sifted Gold Medal Flour 1/4 cup sugar 1 tbsp. grated orange rind
Dissolve yeast in water in mixing bowl. Stir in 2 tablespoons sugar and salt. Add egg, butter, and half the flour. Beat with spoon until smooth. Add rest of flour and mix with fingers squeezing the dough through the fingers until the dough leaves and cleans the sides of the bowl (makes this soft dough easy to handle without the addition of more flour). Knead 20 times on lightly floured board.
Combine 1/4 cup sugar and grated orange rind; set aside.
Cut dough into 12 pieces; shape into balls. Roll balls in Orange-Sugar Mixture. Place balls in well greased 9-inch ring mold, or 8-inch round layer pan, or 12 well greased muffin cups. Let rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour.
Heat oven to 375 degrees F (moderately hot).
Bake 25 to 30 minutes (buns 15 to 20 minutes).
