Thanks so much, Judy - this is such a fascinating recipe - the addition of the potatoes and suet is something unexpected! I would probably use the shortning or butter if I made this.
Also, I haven't ever seen the custard powder products you mentioned down here in the states - but I'll look the next time I'm shopping. Your own recipe sounds fine, though and easy to do.
