My mom is 74 and her recipes are all authentic New England, as she grew up in Massachusetts. Our family tradition for basting a turkey is to combine 1/2 stick of butter, 1 cup of water and 1/3 cup of whiskey in a saucepan on the stove. Keep over very low heat. Baste the turkey with this every half hour. (When you have used it up, use the juice in the turkey pan to baste). This produces a beautifully crisp and golden skin and smells and tastes great, too. We brown our turkey at 375° when first putting it in the oven. Once it starts to brown, turn oven temp down to 325°, baste turkey and cover with foil, then baste as described above. Be careful not to let the foil stick to the turkey skin. I hope this helps. If you are interested in any of my mom's other authentic New England Thanksgiving recipes, just let me know!
