I received my grandmother's cast iron lamb cake mold after she was no longer able to bake. As a budding chef, I felt a great connection to things past. Now that I am of the age that my friends are all starting families of their own, I have started a new tradition by making all of the 1st birthday cakes for the little ones. I hope to some day make my own son or daughter's first lamb cake. It was a great Easter tradition growing up, and it's nice to think it will be around a little longer!
-Use LOTS of pan spray, making sure to get all of the creases. -I have found that a sturdy white cake (usually with buttermilk in the recipe ) does very well. Check out the Gourmet cookbook. General baking time about 35 mins. -Only let the cake cool a few minutes before removing the pan so it does not settle into the pan to stick.
Good luck on your lamb cake traditions! Thanks for sharing tricks of the trade with others!
