Try this, I made them all the time as a kid. Then, my husband realized this is his moms fudge but without the oatmeal. I think this is what you're looking for. (What is important is the soft ball stage like your making candy)

CHOCOLATE FUDGE

2 cups sugar
3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
3 cups oatmeal*
1/2 cup peanut butter*
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt

Combine sugar, cocoa, butter, and milk in a saucepan and bring to a boiling. Boil hard for one minute until soft ball stage. Remove from heat and add oatmeal, peanut butter, salt, and vanilla. Beat until well mixed and drop by spoonsful onto waxed paper. If mixture is slow to harden, add slighty more oatmeal. (If overcooked fudge will be harder)

*NOTE: For fudge omit oatmeal. Peanut butter is optional for fudge.
