This is an adaption of a favorite Indian snack food. I love it and have taken it on almost every back packing trip I've gone on because I get tired of the eternal Gorp. My favorite Indian Market sells it in bulk but it is almost too hot to eat. CHIVRA 1/2 cup yellow (or green) split peas soaked for 2 hours 2 Tbs. Cooking oil 1 cup mixed nuts (Peanuts, almonds and cashews) 2 Tbs. clarified butter 3 cups Rice Krispies 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder 1 tsp. salt 2 Tbs. raisins 1 tsp. sugar 1/4 tsp. cayenne 1 lemon 2 Tbs. toasted sesame seeds 1 Tbs. shredded coconut Drain peas and dry well. Heat oil and Saute peas until they start to brown. Remove from pan. Add the nuts to the pan and Saute until they have a coating of oil. In a large pan, heat the clarified butter and add Rice Krispies, turmeric and salt and mix well and cook for about 10 minutes. Add nuts, peas, raisins, sugar and cayenne. Squeeze the lemon over all and blend. Taste and add more salt if necessary. Stir in coconut.
