Broken Glass Candy
rec.food/Kathy O

Before we begin - while you are actually 'cooking the brew', all kids should NOT Be in the kitchen -- since the mixture gets quite hot :) The fun part comes at the end when the kids get to 'break the glass' :)))

Here are the ingredients and utensils you will need:

Utensils:
Candy Thermometer
Good Strong Cookie sheets (with lip) for each flavor
A small hammer (one you use to hammer in nails --try to clean it - or put aluminum foil over its head!

For each flavor:
4 cups of sugar
1 1/2 cups of Light Karo Syrup
2 cups of cold water
Lorann flavoring Oils (bought at a candy confection store)
Food coloring
Color chart
- cinnamon = red food coloring
- clove flavor = blue
- Anise flavor = purple
- peppermint = yellow
- wintergreen = green
- grape flavor = purple and another color :)))

some confectioner's sugar

Here's how you do it:
Add water, syrup and sugar to a pot - boil to 300 degrees using a candy thermometer.
Add coloring and 1 teaspoon of the flavoring oil

Then --
Pour into lightly buttered pans. (you may want to use wooden trivets to protect your table)
Let cool completely (it will look like a sheet of glass -blue, green, etc.)

When it is completely cooled let the kids come in!!!!! Have them 'smash and crash the candy -- (it will look just like broken glass)

In a plastic bag -- put some confectioner's sugar; throw in your candies -- shake the bag (like shake and bake). Put in cute jars and give as candy Christmas presents.
