Plum Ice Cream From: Kay Hartman Newsgroup: rec.food.cooking Date: 7-18-95
Makes about 1 quart I made this ice cream yesterday for the first time. I thought since it was a little different I would post it. The plums I used (from my trees in my backyard) have very tart skin and so I added additional sugar. This ice cream has a really tart edge, but is also sweet, sort of like a plum is. The recipe was published in the Los Angeles Times on June 27, 1991. I hope you like it.
12 to 14 plums, cut in half (about 4 cups) 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup Port wine 1 cup milk 1 cup whipping cream 2 teaspoons vanilla
Combine plums, 1/2 cup sugar and wine in saucepan. Heat and stir to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until plums are very tender, about 20 minutes. Pass through sieve. Stir remaining sugar into mixture and cool. Stir in milk, whipping cream and vanilla. Freeze in ice cream maker according to manufacturer's directions.
