Famous Fudge Brownies

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1/2 c. cocoa
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 3/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

In a large sauce pan melt butter over low heat, remove from burner and cool for several minutes. Stir sugar and cocoa into the melted butter, stir in vanilla and eggs. Combine flour and salt. Stir into the saucepan mixture. Spread in a lightly greased 9 x 12 cake pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuts over the top. Bake for 25 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Cool.
