Spiced Baked Sweet Potatoes with Walnuts

6 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4), peeled and sliced 1/2 inch thick
2 1/2 teaspoons garam masala
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Make the potatoes: Preheat oven to 400° F. Using 1 tablespoon of the butter, lightly coat a 10-inch pie plate and set aside. Combine the sweet potatoes, 3 tablespoons of melted butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons of garam masala and salt in a large bowl. Layer the potato slices in the prepared pan, cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake until the potatoes are tender -- about 20 more minutes.

Make the topping: Combine remaining butter, remaining garam masala, brown sugar and corn syrup in a small saucepan and cook over medium-high heat until the sugar melts. Pour the syrup over the potatoes, top with the walnuts and serve warm.
