Greek Christmas Cookies

Makes 40

1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups confectioner's sugar
1 egg yolk
2 cups flour -- sifted
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cloves -- ground
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 cups almonds -- finely ground
candied cherries -- halved

Preheat oven to 350F.

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg yolk and all the other ingredients, except cherries. Knead well with hands or spoon.

Shape into small balls with hands dusted with confectioner's sugar. Put on baking sheet 3-inches apart. Press half a candied cherry in the center of each cookie.

Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
