CHOCOLATE CHERRY SAUCE

4 squares (1 oz each) unsweetened chocolate
2 Tbsp butter or margarine
3/4 cup boiling water
2 cups sugar
3 Tbsp light corn syrup
2 tsp vanilla
1 (10-oz jar) maraschino cherries, well drained

Coarsely chop chocolate; heat with butter and boiling water in a large heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until chocolate is melted.

Add sugar and corn syrup. Bring mixture to boiling, lower heat, simmer gently 15 minutes. Do not stir.

Add vanilla and cherries, serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers.

TO REHEAT:
Open jar, place in a saucepan of water, and heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until sauce is just soft enough to pour.

Makes about 3 cups
